Things I Love About Europe Versus Things I Love About America

Dear Rita,

Training camp at Gladstone is about to begin for our short-listed dressage team: Steffen Peters with Ravel, Todd Flettrich with Otto, Katherine Bateson-Chandler with Nartan, Tina Konyot with Calecto, Pierre St. Jacques with Lucky Tiger and last but not least, yours truly with W. We will train together at U.S. Team Headquarters until the 18th of September when everybody ships out to Kentucky.

Lessons Are A Great Way To Keep Track Of Progress

The next function for Ella and Midge is a clinic with Michael Barisone. And since both of those are a long ways away, I've been just focusing on the basics: Ella's been in a snaffle, no spurs or whip, and almost exclusively out in the field, and Midge has been hacking and stretching and not much else.

Who Is Erica McKeever?

It's been a long and winding road to traveling the world with Sapphire!

I have worked at Castle Hill for 22 years. I grew up in England, where I first started riding when I was 10. I was pony mad, and my parents bought me my first pony when I was 12. I showed at local shows and spent every second I could at the stables.

World Equestrian Games: Para-Dressage

When author Helen Thompson wrote, “In riding a horse, we borrow freedom,” she was probably referring to the way horses allow us to experience things we could never accomplish on our own two feet. I like to think that Ms. Thompson’s sentiment is doubly true when it comes to para-equestrian.

An Excellent Trip To Richland

What a great event!.... Having never been to Richland Park in Michigan, I was really impressed with this event. It was horse, rider and spectator friendly. For an area which would not be seen as “horsey,” this event incorporated something for everyone, which could be noted by the number of locals who attended daily to watch.

The True Prospect team did the trip in 11 hours and all horses arrived safe and happy. With Kelley as my right-hand girl, we got the 12 horses settled in in a timely fashion.

A Wonderful Waredaca

Well it’s 1:30 a.m. on Monday morning and as I'm lying here sitting in the back seat of my truck with Bizzie and Emma Ford’s dog Charlie, I'm reflecting over the past two weeks of my life here in eventing land. I really lead an interesting life....

When Fish Attack!

We had a clinic with Scott yesterday, and it was great, and you'll hear all about it tomorrow. Today, though, I present a harrowing tale of intrepid adventurers, fell beasts, and a soggy end. Let it never be said, dear readers, that dressage riders are not hard-core.

A Whole New Way Of Training

The European training program and the American training program—at least the one I know—are very, very different. For starters, many of the stables here breed many of their own horses, and as such, constantly have new young horses to bring along. Each year, the horses that are 3 and turning 4 years old are evaluated for performance and soundness by free-jumping and x-rays, respectively. Those who exhibit great potential and have clean x-rays are then sent to a cowboy to be saddle broke for a few months, before returning to the stable’s training program.

Saddle Fitting 101

Saddle fitting is one part art, one part science and one part magic. And like anything artistic or scientific, there's an element of practice involved; the more horses you see, the more saddles you see, the better trained your eye becomes.

It is crucial that an educated and experienced professional be involved in the fitting of a saddle to a horse and rider, and by that I do not mean someone who simply reps one brand of saddle for one company.
